Thobe sizes are not clothing sizes — they are the length of the garment in inches, measured from the shoulder to the ankle. That is why they run 30 to 62 rather than 2 to 16. To find the right size, you are matching the child or man, not converting between systems.
The quickest way
Measure from the top of the shoulder straight down to the ankle bone. That number is the size. If you cannot measure, take the height in inches and subtract about 10 — a child 46 inches tall takes a size 36.

Ages are a guide only. Children of the same age vary by several inches, so measure where you can.
Men — sizes 52 to 62
Men's sizes follow the same rule: the number is the length in inches from shoulder to ankle. Kids' and men's ranges meet at 52.

Between two sizes?
Take the larger one. A thobe can be hemmed shorter; it cannot be made longer. This is also the answer to whether a child will grow into it — they will, and the hem can come down as they do.
